Voice over Internet Protocol (also called VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet Telephony and Digital Phone) is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet. This new technology allows phone calls to be made by using a Broadband Internet Connection instead of using a standard phone line. Broadband is high-speed Internet access which utilizes a Cable or DSL modem. It gives you a continuous connection to the Internet at speeds much faster than dial-up. In order to become a VoIP customer you need to have a broadband connection already installed.

You can use VoIP with your regular telephone. In order to use VoIP with your regular analog phone you will need to install an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) to plug your phone into your Internet router. This adapter converts the analog signal to digital data, so that the phone can operate over the Internet. Another option is to purchase an IP Phone that has a built-in ethernet port that is ready to connect to the Internet. Most VoIP companies will provide you with everything that you need.

VoIP works the same as your regular phone service. Once you are connected, just pick up the phone and use it. It's very simple. The person that you are calling does not even need to have VoIP service. Your phone will ring just like it normally does and you can use your regular touch-tone phone.
