What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protcol. This new technology allows phone calls to be made by using a broadband Internet connection instead of using a standard phone line. Calls are made over the Internet by converting analog audio signals to digital data. The advantage of VoIP is the ability to place local and long-distance phone calls without paying extra phone charges.
Why should I get VoIP?
The big advantage of VoIP service is that you can call anywhere, anytime for less money. Most calling plans range from $15.00 - $30.00 per month which includes LOCAL and LONG DISTANCE calls.
What is Broadband Internet Service?
Broadband is high-speed Internet access which utilizes a Cable or DSL modem. It gives you a continuous connection to the Internet at speeds much faster than dial-up. To become a VoIP customer, you need to already have a broadband connection.
Can I use VoIP with my regular telephone?
Yes. To use VoIP with your regular analog phone, you will need to install a ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) to plug your phone into your Internet router. The adapter converts the analog signal to digital data, so that the phone can operate over the Internet. Another option is to purchase an IP phone that has a built-in ethernet port that is ready to connect to the Internet. Most VoIP companies will provide you with everything you need.
Does VoIP work the same as my regular phone service?
Yes. Once you are connected, just pick up the phone and use it. It's that simple. The person you are calling does not need to have VoIP service. They just need a phone. Your phone will ring just like it normally does. You can use your same touch-tone phone. You are connecting with VoIP service instead of your old phone company.
Do I need to leave my computer on in order to receive calls?
No. If you are using a phone with an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) adapter, you can still make and receive calls as long as your Internet router is on.
Does VoIP offer services such as call waiting and voice mail?
Some paid VoIP service providers include free extra features like caller identification, call transfer and three-way calling as a part of their subscription. Each provider may vary, so check the service contract for details.
